So you've got your colour theme planned, décor items bookmarked, and you've set up an elaborate Pinterest board with a thousand pins, but your room didn't turn out the way you wanted... Trust us, we've been there. Here are some of our favourite tips for achieving a result more in line with Vogue Living through expert interior plant styling, rather than something resembling a scene from My House Rules!
DO: KEEP IT FRESH
Seasons come and go and so does Kmart décor. Refresh your space with small items each season. This keeps some pennies in the bank whilst also keeping your haven fresh. Some easy items to swap out seasonally are cushions, throws, books and centerpieces.

Don’t worry, we do not recommend throwing out your plant-babies, that’s criminal! Although, we do suggest rotating your plants around your home to freshen up the space (just make sure they move to an area with the same light as they were in). Another way to change up the mood of your room is to switch out your pots. Switch out that old pot plant for one of our terrazzo decorative pots.
DON’T: HOARD YOUR ITEMS
So, we all love our antiques and keep-sakes but sometimes they don’t need to be on display. We know, they all have a sentimental place in our hearts but do you need to display those collectable Coles Mini's or that painting you did in Grade 10 art class... probably not.

DO: MAKE YOUR HOME LIKE AN ONION (ONIONS HAVE LAYERS)
How do all those fancy interior designers make everything look so... good? Layers! Layering is the secret to having décor flow in a room. Want to add depth to your living room easily? Get yourself a stylish tray (metals and woods work wonders), add some coffee table books on top and place on your (now) super stylish coffee table. Finish off with a Monstera Deliciosa or Happy Plant and voila, you have a simple, yet stylish coffee table.
Another layering tip is to place a larger plant such as our Bamboo Parlor Palm or Lady Palm in front of a curtain, which adds greenery whilst blending in... Balance!
DON’T: DECORATE WITH ONE COLOUR OR THEME
Unfortunately, creating a cohesive and stylish space is not as easy as picking two colours. Rust and pale pink will not necessarily transform your living room into a boho sanctuary. Picking a single colour theme can create tunnel vision and misguide us from the true palette of our room! Instead, draw from the current colours in your room’s environment. Have a garden outside your windows? Bring the outdoors in and compliment the space with a Swiss Cheese Vine next to your sofa!
DO: TAKE YOUR TIME
Unlike contestants from The Block we aren’t on a time crunch! We have the luxury of taking our time and evolving our space to the way we like it! Don’t rush and buy 50 cushion covers but rather buy quality pieces which compliment your space! We know you’re going to re-decorate in a few months anyway so why rush?
