The plant, by the plant

Since going global from the gorgeous coastlines of East Africa, I've been mistaken for a sculpture, an artificial plant, and once - flatteringly - 'some kind of designer object'. I'm the ZZ Plant, and my glossy, architectural stems grow from chunky underground rhizomes that store water like little potatoes. Practical upshot: I can cruise through two months without a drink. Try me. (Don't, actually - but I could.)

My care guide is a haiku: any light but harsh sun. Water when bone dry. Accept compliments.

What you'll get (no surprises):

  • Medium - 140mm nursery pot, approx 20-25cm
  • Large - 200mm nursery pot, approx 25-35cm

I arrive in my grower's nursery pot, ready for a stylish upgrade.

Pets: mildly irritating if chewed - one more reason to keep me looking like untouchable art.

Buff the sculpture with Leaf Shine and plinth me - delightfully unexpectedly - in a Pierre Terrazzo Pot in Pink.

🌱 One tree planted with every order.

Key attributes

Popular indoor plant with glossy green leaflets arranged like a fern frond however this plant is more closely related to Peace Lilies (Spathiphyllum) and Swiss Cheese plant (Monstera deliciosa). Underground it creates a bulb-like tuber which helps the plant recouperate after stress but is also a reason never to allow the potting mix to be wet otherwise it will rot.

  • Medium light. Can tolerate shade.
  • Water sparingly, soil to be almost dry.
  • Not so pet friendly.
